Who I am

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Carolina was influenced early on from the stories her father shared with her during his time at El Imparcial, a daily newspaper based in Oaxaca, Mexico. Before immigrating to the United States, Carolina’s father worked in the company’s darkroom, developing and inserting photos into the daily news. The stories from his experience working at that institution would eventually be passed on to Carolina and, ultimately, shape her decision in becoming a photographer.

Although she grew up immersed in music classes, in due course she was at Columbia College taking the school’s photography program. She graduated from Columbia in 2014 with a Bachelors of Arts in Photography concentration on Photojournalism and a Minor in Museum Studies. While at Columbia, she later became Senior Photo Editor at The Columbia Chronicle newspaper which landed her an opportunity to work as Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s Staff Photographer during his 2015 mayoral run while also finding time to be a Teaching Artist for the National Museum of Mexican Art. Despite the visual aspect her life took on with photography, her passion for music has never dwindled.

Caro began working for Festival de Musica Electronica Latina in Chicago in 2011 documenting the festival’s city-wide events and creating portraits of visiting artists. Her role as a music photographer would later expand as she became the Arts & Culture photographer, and currently Photo Editor, at Gozamos, one of the Midwest’s most engaging and outspoken cultural websites. Her love for music is shown in her work traveling to festival such as Supersonico in Los Angeles and to smaller fest like Musica en el Patio en Tijuana, México learning about new artists that influence her and would love to share for everyone to know. She also became the main photographer for Chicago's very own Cumbiasazo, one of Chicago's longest running Latinxt cultural events. She has now been featured in Vogue US & MX, The Guardian, NBC Today, Chicago Reader, Noisey MX & US, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Bulls, Hyundai and many more. Carolina’s love of photography has increased as she explores visual storytelling. Along with the added interaction that comes with community outreach, she is able to capture special moments through her lens at music festivals, in underground arts communities and through artist portraiture
